What is a Spiritual Discipline?
Spiritual disciplines are things that Christians can do to help them grow in their faith. Just as a child will practice piano and spend focused time improving their skills, so a believer can spend focused time doing things that will help them grow in fruitfulness and maturity. This is not about having a “works” mentality. As Dallas Willard used to say, “The Gospel is opposed to earning, but not to effort.” Spiritual disciplines, therefore, are practices that take some effort, but help us grow. Paul the apostle said, “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things” (1 Tim 4:8). Paul often compared the Christian life to something that needs training. He also stated, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it [strict training] to get a crown that will last forever” (1 Cor. 9:25).
Throughout Christian history there have been many men and women of God who understood this and left us great examples of godliness through their lives. As we read of the way they followed the Lord, and some of the things they did to “grow in grace” (2 Pet. 3:18), we are encouraged and challenged in our own lives.
The above book brings together some of the greatest classics that have to do with spiritual formation and the spiritual disciplines. They are writings that have been recommended by leaders such as Dallas Willard, Richard Foster and others.
Spiritual Disciplines List
There is no concise Biblical list of spiritual disciplines. But looking through Scripture we can see numerous practices that men and women did to become more sensitive to the things of God. Some of these are:
- Prayer
- Fasting
- Reading God’s Word
- Worship
- Silence
- Communal Celebration
- Giving
- Service (helping others)
- Confession

Very Inspirational!”
I am a little over half way through this book. It is a fascinating group of biographies. They are very complete, with details that I did not find in other biographies of some of the individuals. Some of them are hard reading, but most are extremely interesting, as for example: John Patton with the cannibals, David Livingston in Africa, William Booth with the Salvation Army, etc…It is an extremely worthwhile book”
