The Life and Works of Fenelon
Archbishop Fenelon was a deeply spiritual leader, as well as a tutor to French royalty. A combination of godliness and brilliance led him to write on wide-ranging topics from theology to philosophy, apologetics, history and poetry. Similar to C. S. Lewis, he used story, myth and poetry, as well as theology, to teach and showcase the things of God. This 25-in-1 collection is the largest English edition of Fenelon’s works available (over 2,000 pages)!
Francois Fenelon, (also referred to as François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon), was a French archbishop, theologian, and prolific writer. His ministry was marked by deep piety and wisdom, along with great intellectual ability, oratory skills, and zeal. His talents soon led him to be appointed the tutor of the eldest grandson of King Louis XIV of France. It was for him that Fenelon wrote his “Fables,” “Dialogues of the Dead,” and his well-known “Adventures of Telemachus” – as a way to subtly teach the young prince lessons in humility and self-control. Besides his pastoral letters, fables and novels, he also wrote on apologetics (The Existence of God), history and philosophy (Lives of the Ancient Philosophers), practical ministry (Dialogue on Pulpit Eloquence), and education (Treatise of the Education of Daughters). His writings show a deep spirituality and a balanced understanding of Scripture that has endeared him to Catholics and Protestants alike for centuries.
